Our Review of 3rd Grade Science Reading Comprehension

Abitalk has built an impressive collection of narrow focused educational apps for school and home. Their reading comprehension apps are no different. With most grades covered, Abitalk has separate reading comprehension apps for fiction and fact (science). Being able to separate these topics is beneficial if you are trying to reach reluctant readers with a preference for one of the genres.

3rd Grade Science Reading Comprehension contains 20 passages, each with 2 – 3 paragraphs (250-400 words). Reading Comprehension is tested with 3 different quiz types (Multiple Choice, Yes and No, and Vocabulary Match). The subject for each passage are interesting and relevant and include topics such as Phases of The Moon, The Digestive System, Tropical Rainforests and Energy.

With the ability to create your own lessons, add multiple users, get reports and connect with a Dropbox account – this app definitely has the classroom in mind. That being said, it still works as very well for home or home-school.

Although, the overall design is a bit disappointing we feel that this is one of the best Reading Comprehension apps in the app store today

Features include:

  • Add & Manage Multiple Accounts
  • Create your own lessons & tests
  • Detailed Reporting
  • 3 different quiz types
  • 20 passages, 8 questions for each
  • Password Protect Setting
  • Non-fiction topics
  • Connect with Dropbox
When we think of the overall quality of the app, we look more at how the whole app works together. Regardless of the educational quality of an app, if an app looks shoddy – well, then that reflects poorly on the app.

In this case, the app’s design is very basic with not much effort to the visual design which is a real pity. In addition, links to “about us” and “more games” is more prominent than the main function of the app. About Us and More Games have plenty of external links to the App Store, Social Media, email and the web.

Abitalk has done an outstanding job of pinpointing pain points in language arts education and develop apps to address those needs.

Reading Comprehension Science 3rd Grade helps children practice their comprehension skills. The science focus of this app can either be used on reluctant readers with an interest in science, or for those who need more of a push in non-fiction comprehension.

Each passage is 2-3 paragraphs long with 8 reading comprehension questions. There are 3 types of quiz question: Multiple Choice, Yes and No, and Vocabulary Match. The 3 different types of quiz question allow the reader to think and understand the content in different ways.

There are 2 modes (Practice and Test): Practice Mode gives you positive or negative feedback as you answer questions. Test Mode gives no feedback regarding whether your answer is correct or incorrect.

One thing missing, is the ability to hide the passage when answering questions.

We did not rate this app in regard to entertainment

For an educational product, I feel $2.99 is a good deal when compared with non-app work books which cost upwards of $8. There are 2 versions per grade, so expect to pay another $2.99 if you want both fiction and non-fiction covered.

My feeling is that $2.99 for this type of educational product is definitely worth it.

The app is easy to use, though the design could be improved, especially the flow on the home page.

Buttons for “About Us” and “More Games” are too prominent on the home page. The buttons link to separate screens within the app, but those screens have external links to email, their website, Facebook, Twitter and other apps. We like to see these links better protected from kids, to prevent them from exiting to social media, websites and the app store where they could purchase additional apps.

  • Contains NO ads
  • Contains NO iap’s (in app purchases)
  • Contains external links (on separate screens) to social media, the app store, and the web.
