Quality

City Letters is an awesome app for kids that is full of bright colors, clear graphics, and simple animations that help to keep children engaged while they learn. The music and sound effects that accompany the app are also done well and are perfect for an app that teaches children the sounds each letter makes as a precursor to reading. The set up of the app is also very easy to use and does not require a lot of instruction to get started. In the event children need assistance, there are hint options available to assist throughout the app.

While the overall quality is very good there are a few things that could use a little work. For instance, when selecting a new activity there tends to be a bit of a delay before the activity opens. Also, some of the sounds for each letter in the ‘I Spy’ game are not very clear and can cause children to get frustrated as they play.

Education

The overall educational features in the app are wonderful. In addition to learning to trace each letter, children will also learn the sounds of letters as well as practice their spelling, reading, and problem solving skills through a variety of fun activities. The developers have done an excellent job with using creative activities to help children learn. For example, the ‘I Spy’ game provides a variety of pictures and children are to select the picture that begins with a certain sound. There is also an activity that helps children identify specific letters and another that assists children with spelling by providing a word template that children must use to drag and drop the matching letters. With so many diverse activities, this app is a great way for preschoolers to get ready for school.

Note: The free version offers a puzzle activity in addition to the tracing feature, however the other activities may be accessed through the in-app purchase link.

Entertainment

While City Letters is a primarily educational app, children will still have a ton of fun as they learn. With the puzzle activity, ‘I Spy’, and the other learning activities children will enjoy playing and learning with this app. Younger children will also get a kick out of the jumping letters, the sound effects, and the simple animations that accompany each activity.

Value

City Letters offers two activities (the puzzle and letter tracing activities) for free with an option to buy the full version using the in app purchase for just under two dollars. For that price you get 6 activities with 350 levels and you just can’t beat that. Parents will quickly find this app is worth every penny for what you get and children are going to have a blast using this app so it is sure to stand the test of time.

Child Friendliness

The developers have done a great job creating an app that is easy to use while still offering a bit of guidance throughout. While it doesn’t require a lot of instruction to get started, there are a few hint options available throughout the activities in case children get stuck which is great for younger players.

Parents will also appreciate the fact that there are no advertisements to worry about and the in app purchase link is included under the information tab that is protected. This simple, yet effective measure ensures that children will not get into areas they shouldn’t be and provides extra protection for children as they play.

City Letters is a great app for preschoolers as it teaches a variety of early learning skills in reading, writing, and spelling in a fun and easy to use learning environment.
