Overview

The Lorax is another wonderful app by Oceanhouse Media that is featured in our At-A-Glance: Environment Apps for Kids that teaches children a valuable lesson about what can happen if we keep cutting down trees. This Dr. Seuss classic has all the wonderful extras that Oceanhouse Media is known for including text highlighting, narration, vocabulary words, etc. making this a great app for children of all ages.

Features include:

  • Text highlighting
  • Narration
  • Voice Record

Quality

Oceanhouse Media always does a great job with creating ebooks that are inviting and engaging and this app is no different. The illustrations are taken straight from the hard copy of the book and the lively narration and voices that are used make this story lots of fun to read. The simple zooming feature serves as a slight form of animation that also helps to keep children engaged.

Education

This app not only allows children to follow along with the narrator and the text highlighting feature, but it also includes a voice record option that can help early readers practice reading out loud and then hearing the playback. The developers have also included a feature that allows children to learn a variety of words by tapping and touching the illustrations as they read through the story which is great for children just beginning to learn to read.

In addition to the reading skills and vocabulary words for children to practice, this app teaches children a very important lesson about what can happen if we don’t care for our trees the way we should. Pollution can take over, wildlife lose their homes, and so many other problems can occur. For this reason alone, The Lorax is one story every child should read.

Entertainment

While there are no additional games or activities in this storybook app, the story itself is quite entertaining. With wonderful voices, great illustrations, narration, and the slight animations not to mention a great Dr. Seuss tale, this app is one children will love even without the extras.

Value

Priced at just under five dollars, this app is a bit more pricey than some other storybook apps, however it does have a lot to offer in the education department. While there are no extra activities, there are many ways for children to practice their reading skills, record their voices, tap and touch through illustrations for vocabulary words which is great. Parents won’t be disappointed with the illustrations and story either as Oceanhouse Media always delivers wonderful, high quality apps.

Child Friendliness

With text highlighting and a simple tap/touch user interface, this app is great for children of all ages. The narration allows pre-readers to follow along and enjoy this wonderful story using the auto play or read to me options. Parents will also be happy to know that this app is completely safe for kids to play. With no social media buttons or in app purchase links, this app is great for children of all ages. There are a few buttons on the main page (info, other apps, etc.) that are protected so parents don’t have to worry about that at all. Children can easily read through this story on their own or with the narrator with no problem at all.

The Lorax is a wonderful storybook app for children of all ages that teaches a valuable lesson about the importance of taking care of our environment and trees.
