In this first of three app series, Ansel and Clair learn about dinosaurs from the Cretaceous period. They visit a modern dinosaur dig, meeting Dr. Bones, a paleontologist who helps them uncover fossils. With the help of their spaceship, Marley, they are able to travel back in time where they can take pictures for their travel log and learn fascinating facts about the dinosaurs.

The app does a great job immersing the user into the Cretaceous period where they will interact with the dinosaurs while learning well researched facts. Beautiful graphics and animations, in combination with the music, sounds and narration make you feel like you are part of the expedition.

Besides great navigation features for moving around the app, a tracker symbol indicates all of the objects with interactions. Clairvision is a feature that allows you to learn additional information about specific subjects. Stickers are earned after completing the Clairvision interactions and can then be used in the travel log. Pictures are can be added to the travel log after they are taken using Ansel’s special camera and matching the pictures taken with the drawings in the travel log. Another nice feature is the ability to see how the continents look today compared to how they appeared during the Cretaceous period. This is done using the spinning globe.

Four profiles can be set, allowing each to maintain their own travel log. Sound, music and volume can all be controlled in-app. Also available in-app are detailed instructions on how to use the app, background information into the making of the app, contacts, Facebook and Twitter buttons. These items are tucked away where the child is not as likely to find them.

Ansel and Clair: Cretaceous Dinosaurs is an iPad only app. The app does not contain in-app purchases, ads or easily accessible social media buttons. It does include a link on the main page to more apps. You may want to warn your child that touching this button will cause them to exit the app.

Bottom line

A must have for dinosaur lovers or anyone wanting a fun and interactive way to learn more about dinosaurs of the Cretaceous period.
