Quality
It’s easy to get wrapped up in expecting extras from eBook apps. While Elly’s Christmas may not be the most sophisticated title I’ve ever seen, it does deliver a darling story, a charming set of characters, and include some interactive features for children to tap on and off for each page.
The app sports both read-to-me and read-it-myself modes, making it ideal even for the littlest members of your clan.
Education
Language is quite simple in this app, making it a learning opportunity.
Your child may start out using the read-to-me story telling feature, or even asking you to read it to them. As they become more familiar with the tale, the read-it-myself mode creates a learning environment perfect for simple reading practice.
Entertainment
Entertainment-wise, the Elly series is quite darling. The stories are brief and to the point, keeping story time amusing and interesting and interactive.
Value
The price is right on target, too. Each title in the Elly series costs $.99, and can be used universally, so you can take the Elly titles with you on your iPhone or enjoy them on the larger screen real estate of the iPad at home.
Child Friendly
As with all kids’ apps, I’m always on the lookout for outside links and other non-kid-friendly elements. The Elly’s Christmas app does have links to additional titles, but they are tucked away at the end of the app and require more than one confirmation to open. As long as your iTunes account has password protected purchases (something I recommend all parents do!) there’s no need to fear even the most nimble-fingered child.
With all that care, I have no trouble endorsing this app. It’s a big hit around these parts.
