In addition to the wonderful images, the developers also did a great job with creating an app that is functional and easy to use. The “snap it’ function allows users to take photos of leaves or flowers as a way to identify a species they found as opposed to searching through the many images to find the one that matches. Once the photograph is added it is then kept in the “collections” area for later viewing.

The high-quality images in addition to the technical names provided in the app provide a great way for visual learners to learn a wide variety of trees. And with over 2,000 images children can learn to identify the various species not just by the look of the leaves, but also by the fruits, flowers, and bark as well.

This is one of the best apps that will encourage families to get outdoors to explore their own environments while learning and exploring together.

Entertainment

While this app is set up for more of an educational function, it does provide a wonderful opportunity for families to get outside and explore together. Using this app on hikes or while exploring their own backyard by using the “nearby species” feature provides a great way for parents and children to connect and learn while having fun in the great outdoors.

Value

You would never guess an app with such high-quality images and a vast amount of information would be so affordable, but Leafsnap For iPad is absolutely free! This is definitely a wonderful value when you consider all of the knowledge and information that is included in one app. Instead of taking a clunky reference book of information, just grab your iPad and head out for a wonderful day of exploring.

Child Friendliness

While young children may have a hard time using his app because of some of the more technical features, with the help of a parent, they too can enjoy learning about the various leaf and tree species.

Elementary-aged children will not have a problem maneuvering through the app, however parents will want to be aware of the option to set up a profile for each user’s collection as well as the “nearby species” function that uses the individuals location to find species within the area. With that said there are not other social media links or in-app purchase links to be concerned about.

The perfect educational app that will inspire children and parents to get outside to explore the various tree and leaf species in their environment.
