Math Climber HD is a very high-quality app. Everything works as it is designed to, and developers have done a good job of minimizing distractions and making the game intuitive to use. There is a brief instructional page about the scoring system. The graphics are somewhat minimalist-animations are a bit jerky, but overall, the game is fun to play. It does gather data about players’ performance, and teachers or parents can see player accuracy at each level attempted. However, the reporting system could use a few tweaks in regard to how it shows student errors. It seems to be showing the stimulus problem, but not the answer selected, which would be very helpful for adults to be able to see.
This app presents outstanding opportunities to practice a wide array of math skills at the elementary and middle school levels, and is age appropriate for all age groups. Players select one of 18 topics, and then one of three levels of difficulty. There are four options for play, ranging from an untimed practice system through competitive play against the computer. The app allows for practice on basic computation, operations with fractions, work with decimals and percents, least common multiple and greatest common factor, place value, and more. Each section presents problems in multiple formats. For example, the addition game might ask 4+8=? Or it might ask 4+___=12. It also gives four multiple choice answers that may be numbers or other addition combinations that are equivalent to the answers. There is great variety at all of the levels in problem presentation.
Math Climber HD is a fun app that kids are likely to be willing to play for quite a while. First of all, players get to create an avatar by choosing clothing, hair color, skin tone, and so forth. As they play, they earn coins for successful work, and the coins can be used to purchase additional items for their avatar, such as hair styles, sunglasses, and so forth. Coins can also be used for a 50/50 option for difficult problems to eliminate two incorrect answers. After each successful climb, the climber gives the player a “high five.” After stars are earned, the climber goes into a dance hall complete with disco ball and lighted floor to perform a victory dance. One suggestion would be for a bit of change up to the end-of-round animation and sound effects-currently the climber goes back down the wall, out of sight, then sounds like he or she falls the remaining feet and animals make disturbed noises. The announcer always responds that “That’s going to leave a mark.” Some variety for this portion that is randomized would help keep students from becoming bored.
This app is $1.99 in the App Store, and is a great value. It can be used by students from early elementary school through even high school to practice basic math skills in timed or untimed settings, so it would be very useful to just about everyone.
Math Climber is mostly child-friendly, but there is unprotected access to email through the Progress Report section.
