Pretty Pet Math App Review

App Info

Price: Free

Overview

Think you know how to solve basic math problems? Pretty Pet Math adds a twist to the equation by having pets cross the street to reach the correct answer. There’s only one problem – people are crossing the street at the same time. Kids will have to maneuver their pets around the people to get them to the right answers and score points in the game.

Features include:

  • Multiple levels
  • Addition and Subtraction
  • Multiplication and Division
  • Frogger-style game
  • Cute pets

Quality

At the beginning of the app, kids are introduced to the anime-style people and cuddly pets they’ll be interacting with as they play. A simple game screen gives kids access to the different skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) and access to the app’s store. Smaller icons point to the privacy policy, more apps, and the scoreboard. The app doesn’t exude high quality, but it still has a pretty smooth design. Where it lacks in quality the most is in the game play. At times it can be a bit difficult to move the pets across the road which can cause them to accidentally run in to people.

Education

The free version of the app comes with addition and subtraction problems. Multiplication, division, and mixed practice are available through an in-app purchase. Each skill also comes with multiple levels of difficulty, although kids must successfully complete each level to move on to the next level. While completing the levels involves solving the problems correctly, the main focus of the game is on crossing the street successfully. This may be somewhat frustrating to kids who know the answers, but have a hard time avoiding people.

Entertainment

Kids might find crossing the street difficult, but it will also become somewhat addicting. The more they play, the more kids will begin to notice the patterns in which the people appear, making it easier to find the gaps and get to the correct answer. Even when kids lose a life, they’ll want to keep playing to see if they can successfully make it across the street the next time. At times the responsiveness of the game and the number of people crossing the road may prove frustrating, but it’s not enough to keep the game from being fun.

Value

For kids who just want to practice their basic addition and subtraction skills, the game proves to be a great value. Older kids will have to purchase access to multiplication and division problems through an IAP. Each additional mode is fairly inexpensive and worth the price.

Child Friendliness

Younger kids may have trouble playing the game at first, but they’ll have little trouble navigating the app. Parental locks help keep restricted content secure. However, the parental locks feature math problems with multiple-choice style answers so kids could easily guess the correct answer and gain access to additional apps or make an in-app purchase.
