Review Summary:

As the parent of a 5 year old, I am always looking out for ways to help him stay on top of his reading skills, especially during the summer. Any resources I can get my hands on to help him become a strong reader build confidence in his abilities. Read – Kids learn to read and write in 20 lessons is the perfect way to do that! This app combines two highly effective and proven methods of helping kids learn to read: Phonics and Whole Language. Through a variety of fun and engaging lessons this app aims to take children up to a 2nd grade reading level by the time they finish the app.

The app starts out with the basics: tracing letters and letter sounds. Each level gradually increases in complexity and difficulty moving through spelling words, then sentences, reading stories, and even providing a freestyle writing pad where children can write their own words, stories and sentences. The lessons progress at an age-appropriate pace and children can go back and re-do any of the lessons that they need extra practice on before moving on.

There are several things about this app that I appreciate. One is that the lessons introduce the letters based on their frequency in they appear in the English language, not in alphabetical order. This really helps the child to be able to read more words more quickly. Additionally, when the child moves up to the reading levels of the game, the app uses symbols and pictures to identify letter combinations to help children facilitate reading. If I had one criticism about this app, it would be that some of the letter sounds are a little difficult to understand when the narrator reads them. We found it difficult to distinguish between the Letters O and A.

My son and I have been working through the lessons for the past four days and so far they are a big hit! I am so grateful that I found this app during the summer and I have every confidence that he will begin Kindergarten in a few weeks better prepared and more confident for having used it. We will continue to use these lessons until school begins and even after. My son enjoys them and has asked every day when it is time to do his “reading game”. If you are looking for a fun and easy way to get your child excited about reading or give them an extra boost of reading confidence before school begins, then this app is definitely for you!
