Top 10 Books for 10 Year Olds:

1. The Trials of Apollo, Book 1: The Hidden Oracle by Rick Riordan

The Trials of Apollo, Book 1  Read Parent Reviews | Check Best Prices

On a number of kids’ books “hot lists,” The Trials of Apollo, Book 1: The Hidden Oracle by Rick Riordan also manages the top position for ten year olds this year.

Zeus is mad enough to kick his son Apollo off of Olympus, sending him hurling to New York City in the form of a normal teenage boy. Only this teenager is chased relentlessly by demi-gods, demons, and other destructive creatures.

Rick Riordan is an experienced writer and he mixes fun and adventure well. While it is not necessary to have read the earlier series, I would strongly recommend doing so before picking up this one. There are many references to characters and events from his past books.

In theme this book is very similar to Marvel’s Thor movie in which a god becomes mortal but takes some time to adjust to his new situation. I enjoyed Apollo’s character development and how he changes throughout the course of the adventure, perfect for a ten year old.

The War that Saved My Life by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley also hits high among the top 10 books for 10 year olds in 2017.

Ada is nine-years-old with a twisted foot, a cruel mother, and a one-bedroom apartment that has been her prison since she was born. In the dead of night, this little girl ventures to London to escape her mom and the devastations of World War II. What a powerful, profound story.

The WSJ got it right when they said: “Achingly lovely . . . Nuanced and emotionally acute, this vivid tale from the wartime home front will have readers ages 10-14 wincing at Ada’s stumbles and rejoicing to the point of tears in her victories.”

3. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling

Third up on the list – Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling.

I loooove Harry Potter. In the original, Harry Potter discovers who he is—a hereditary wizard with untapped magical abilities. This is the introduction to the world of Hogwarts. Of course, I am STILL waiting on my Hogwarts letter. Wink!

Rowling also has the uncanny ability to make her characters, as well as the magical world around them, seem so real! From the very first moment, the reader becomes immersed in this very quirky, wonderfully weird world, where nothing is as it seems, unexpected surprises await, and household chores can be accomplished by the mere wave of a wand (something I positively loved).

Micah Tuttle is a curious kid who believes in fairytales and magic. When Micah hears about the Circus Mirandus from his Grandpa Ephraim, he sets out to find it and a talented magician. One who can bend light and move the universe. This is a book about belief and miracles.

Micah has spent all of his ten years hearing his Grandpa Ephraim’s wonderful and magical stories of Circus Mirandus and thought that that was exactly what they were: stories. Grandpa Ephraim is now very ill, indeed, and reveals to Micah that the stories were all true. Not only that, but that when Ephraim visited the Circus many years ago, the Lightbender promised him a miracle and that he has called for that miracle to be honored.
