Promote the importance of kindness to your children by encouraging them to be “randomly” kind. Try any of the following ideas, and feel free to use them as inspiration for other acts of kindness!
Vending Machine
Give your children spare change from the bottom of your purse to put in vending machines. Tell them doing so makes them “vending machine fairies” and that it will put smiles on the faces of the people who use them next.
Chores
Foster healthy relationships among your children by encouraging them to do each other’s chores in secret. For example, your younger child could put all the toys strewn about your older child’s room away while the older one is at school or sports practice. The older child will love coming home to a clean room!
Toy Donations
Explain to your children that some kids don’t have as many toys as they do because their parents are struggling to find work, they are in foster care, etc. Ask them if they want to help you shop for toys to donate to such children via assorted charity programs. They will likely very much enjoy helping pick toys they think other kids will like. If they have any new toys still in their packaging that they don’t want, they can donate those too.
Get Well Cards
Have your kids make get well cards for sick grandparents, other family members, and friends. Provide plenty of fun embellishments, such as glitter, sequins, and felt. If you and the children can deliver the get well cards, that’s even better.
“Thank You”
Teach your children the importance of saying “thank you” to service people. Set a good example by always saying thank you to such people, and encourage them to do the same. Say thank you to servers, bartenders, toll booth workers, firemen, valets, etc.
