Overview

Put your kids to bed with Laura’s Star and the Dream-Monsters. In this soothing story, kids follow Laura and Tommy as they head to the City of Dreams to find Tommy’s lost dog. On the journey kids will encounter beautiful illustrations with a few animated components, a few fun activities that allow them to play a role in the journey, and dream-like background music that will help them relax and get ready for sleep. While the story lacks written text and contains a few other disappointments, it still serves as a quality bedtime story. Kids who have read about some of Laura’s other adventures will particularly enjoy this new tale.

Features include:

  • Mini games within story
  • Animated illustrations
  • Dream-like background music
  • Narrated in English, Mandarin Chinese, and German

Quality

Beautiful illustrations greet kids as they begin reading Laura’s Star and the Dream-Monsters. Designed as a quality bedtime story, both these illustrations and the dream-like background music will help kids get prepared for bed and relax as they listen to the story. While they’ll enjoy listening to the music and the story and looking at the illustrations, they may be a bit disappointed by the animations as they tend to be limited and not very exciting, just a few twinkling stars and randomly moving pieces. Developers also advertise that the story is available in three languages, but it’s not immediately clear how to access languages other than English.

Education

This app is not being rated for education.

Entertainment

Rather than getting kids excited, this story offers a great way to help them wind down at bedtime. However, that doesn’t mean kids won’t be entertained. They’ll find themselves soothed by the narrator’s voice and enjoy some of the brief opportunities to interact with the illustrations, particularly when they tap on the twinkling star. The story itself will also entertain kids as they start to hope that Tommy really can find his lost dog.

Value

Laura’s Star and the Dream-Monster offers an experience and price comparable to many other animated eBooks for kids. What it lacks is written text, which makes it better for entertainment than for education, and may disappoint some kids who want to read-along on their own.

Child Friendliness

Kids will find themselves able to easily navigate through the story thanks to the arrows showing them how to move from page to page. However, the same is not always true of the few mini games/activities spread throughout the book because most of them lack instructions to help kids know how to play. Most will just ignore the activities and move on with the story. Because the settings button is not obvious and is protected, kids will stay in the story.

Despite the lack of text, kids will enjoy going on another journey with Laura and her little brother Tommy. They'll head to the City of Dreams to hunt for Tommy's missing dog and they'll need kids' help to find it.
