STEM Storiez-Wootzy Colors App Review
STEM Storiez – Wootzy Colors is an app designed to help very young children learn about colors in an interactive, colorful e-book. It includes animations and sound effects as well as optional narration and control of the appearance of the text. Wootzy Colors is designed to be used on its own or with a turtle-like plush smart toy called Zumo.
- Control of audio and text features
- Colorful, interactive animations
- Multi-sensory experience
- Control amount and relative volume of audio
Wootzy Colors is a high-quality app that will engage young learners as they explore colors in the interactive story. The ebook features surprise animations on each page that children will discover as they tap on various parts of the screen. Developers did a great job of making the app customizable for children of all levels and abilities, particularly those who have sensory issues. It would be nice if they included a more comprehensive outline of the features for parents; the app has a lot to offer, but some parents may not understand well enough to appreciate the finer points. Also, the app optionally connects with a smart toy called Zumo, and the link for more information about the toy is incorrect. The correct link is http://zyrobotics.com/our-products/ for interested users.
Stem Storiez-Wootzy Colors is an interactive ebook designed to help the very young learn to recognize and name colors. The story is appealing, and the colorful space creatures (the “Wootzies”) are adorable! Toddlers and preschoolers will enjoy following the story as they see each Wootzy’s home planet. The narrator encourages participation in the story as she invites children to say the names of each color again and again.
I do wish this app included a section for some free play with the colors after the story ends. This would extend its educational value and also make it fun for the youngsters.
Wootzy Colors is a cute e-book that will engage toddlers and preschoolers with bright, interactive animations. Developers did a fine job of creating engaging characters that are just naturally lovable. The book would be more entertaining, however, if there were a bit more of a storyline, and/or some interactive activities based on colors, such as sticker play, coloring, or some game-like activities like “pop the color” where kids could match and tap the target color.
This app is $2.99 on the App Store. That seems a bit pricey, considering the simple nature of the interactions and the fact that the ebook does not include any breakout activities. There is a lot more value to the special needs population, though, since users have such complete control over the presentation of the text and sound effects. This e-book could well be ideal for children with sensory issues or other special needs.
This app is very child-friendly.
