STEM Storiez App Review

Overview

“Kids who like animals and are building letter recognition skills will enjoy The Name Game. This unique app combines kids’ names with short rhymes related to animals. For every letter in a child’s name, the app provides a short description of an animal. Kids will enjoy seeing their name come to life in a special way.

Features include:

  • Information about animals
  • Letter recognition skills
  • Personalized story
  • Interactive components

Quality

On the main screen of the app, kids are prompted to enter their name. The box is a little small and parents may want to assist kids to make sure their name is spelled correctly. Theoretically, kids could enter any group of up to ten letters in the box to play the game. One kids enter their name the story starts. The app flows smoothly, offers clear audio narration, and includes buttons so kids can navigate backwards and forwards within the story.

Education

This app and the story within in it are unique because they focus on two area of learning: STEM concepts and letter/name recognition. While the two don’t quite seem to go together, kids can still benefit from the app. The animal rhymes included in the app are short and informative. Kids are not only limited to animals that start with the letters of their name either. Any animal name that contains the letter A could be used. For example, a child named Sam may learn about a giraffe for letter A and the story will point out that giraffe contains the letter A which is also in the child’s name.

Entertainment

As kids read through the story, they’ll experience colorful pictures, fun animal rhymes, and a few interactive components. Unfortunately, the app seems to give similar animals each time a child plays the game, so parents may want to enter other names into the story for kids to see a larger variety of animals.

Value

The app is priced comparably to other ebooks. However, it feels like it is priced a little high. An in-app purchase allows parents to buy the name game book.

Child Friendliness

Although the app asks for a child’s name, it does not store that information. On the main page, the app contains buttons to buy the book and access the protected parent area. Both are protected by a parental lock.
