This app is high quality. Developers were very thorough in their selection of topics covered. The app has clear instructions both for the concepts and for accessing the mini-game. It might be beneficial to include a comprehensive information area, though, that tells adult users about features such as saving student progress scores and explains the differences between the modes.
7th Grade Math Common Core is very educational. The material covered is quite comprehensive, and would make a good supplement for classroom activities. The step-by-step review mode features clear teaching in the form of notes that explain each step or concept, combined with visual aids and problems being worked in the same fashion. There is also a quick review mode that runs through the review problems without the documentation, simply showing the problems being worked and finally answered. Nice use is made of color coding to call attention to various steps in the problem. And the app includes an unlimited array of practice problems with randomly-generated numbers.
One slight drawback is that some sections (at least) draw upon understanding from other areas to work the problems. For example, the section that provides practice for operations with signed numbers poses problems that also involve percents, fractions and decimals. A sample practice problem for adding signed numbers was -7% + 13/100. This intermingling of percents and fractions might interfere with the primary focus skill. It would be better if each section were entirely independent, so that students who need to work on several areas will have more success with the skills being taught without interference from unrelated skills.
The app allows users to earn “robots” as they complete practice problems correctly. When a few robots have been collected, users can choose to go into the “labyrinth” which is a low-res maze game where they collect treasures and avoid hazards. It offers a nice break from studying, but may not be enticing enough by itself to motivate students to complete assignments or to practice on their own.
This app costs $4.99 on the App Store, which is an outstanding value. Users will not only receive review instruction of six large common core math areas, but they will also be able to practice with an unlimited array of problems.
