All Different Colors by Jean Ruth App Review

Overview
Does your child have a favorite color? In All Different Colors green is clearly Matt’s favorite color and that causes the other crayons to feel left out, especially gray. While the others have worn down tips, gray’s tip is still nice and pointy. As kids read through this animated picture book, they get to experience gray’s feelings as the other crayons are chosen one by one. Will gray ever get its chance? Kids will have to read to find out.
Features include:
- Animated illustrations
- Narrated text
- Page-to-page navigation
- Relatable story
Quality
The main downside to All Different Colors is the ebook’s lack of polish. While it offers animated illustrations, some of the animations are bit random, while others are difficult to spot. The book also features an amateurish narrator who occasionally misreads the text and could add a bit more distinction to the characters’ voices. However, the app does offer a few quality elements, such as an index of pages, page-by-page navigation, and delightful background music.
Education
Kids will benefit most from the book’s focus on socio-emotional skills. As they listen to the story, they’ll learn how to handle what it feels like to be left out and to not be accepted. They’ll encounter subtle discussions about self-confidence and self-acceptance. However, since the book lacks text highlighting and has a few issues with narration, it is not ideal for teaching reading skills.
Entertainment
As kids read through the story, they’ll be entertained by the fun illustrations and cartoonish crayons. Each page features a few animated illustrations to add a bit more excitement to the story, but kids may wish there were a bit more. Overall, the story is a cute read that most kids will enjoy, but likely not something they’ll feel enticed to pick up again and again.
Value
The app is priced similarly to other animated ebooks for kids, but lacks many of the traditional ebook features (text highlighting, read to myself option, seasoned narrator). As a result, it does not offer a strong value at its current price.
Child Friendliness
Kids will find that the book is easy to navigate. All of the lessons in the book are appropriate. There is no parental area or other info screen to take kids away from the story.
