Jungle Care Taker  App Review

App Info

Price: Free (In App Purchases)

Overview

Jungle Care Taker lets kids perform the role of veterinarian for six very sick jungle animals. From splinters and cuts to bugs and broken bones, these animals are all in a bad way. Kids must set their bones, bandage their cuts, pull out the splinters, and complete a host of other tasks to bring them back to health. When they’re finished, they can take a photo of their animals who, while fixed up, still look a little worse for the wear.

Features include:

  • Care for sick animals
  • Take photos of healthy animals
  • Choose from six different animals
  • Receive positive praise

Quality

Developers tout an easy and fluid interface for kids and this is largely true. The app’s main screen has a large play button that leads to six different animals that need help. Once kids select an animal, some of the fluidity disappears. When kids first play, they may struggle with figuring out what to do. The app does eventually offer some help through non-verbal instructions that appear after a period of incorrect actions. These instructions, while helpful, stay on the screen for a little bit too long when kids are ready to get to the activity. The activities are fairly easy for kids to complete, but a few are touchy. For example, when pulling splinters out of the giraffe, kids have to make sure the splinter hits the pan just so or the splinter will just keep re-appearing.

Education

This app is not being rated for education.

Entertainment

The animals in this app are entertaining and kids will love working to make them feel better. Each animal has a ton of problems that needed to be taken care of, so kids will spend a good bit of time trying to make them well. They’ll pull out splinters, put on bandages, take x-rays, and even comb for bugs. All of these are activities that provide a range of motions for kids to complete. Once an activity is complete, kids are rewarded with a thumbs up. After an animal is entirely fixed up, they get the opportunity to save a picture, if parents have given the app access to photos.

Value

Jungle Care Taker is a lower quality version of high-quality apps such as Dr. Panda’s Hospital or Toca Pet Doctor and yet the full version of the app is nearly twice the price. While kids may enjoy this app, parents may want to look at one of the cheaper and higher-quality options that kids will enjoy just as much, if not more.

Child Friendliness

Developers tout a child-friendly app. While all of the non-child friendly content is protected, the app is still full of “rate us” and “more apps” icons. In fact, every time a child helps an animal, a “more apps” icon appears to the side of the picture of the healthy animal. A “rate us” star also regularly appears in the upper corner. Before purchasing the full version of the app, kids are also shown a large icon encouraging kids to purchase the full version on the app’s main screen.
