Monkey Stick Crossing App Review

App Info

Price: Free

Overview

Can you grow the sticks to the correct length and get from tree to tree? It’s not as easy as it sounds. In this free game, kids can guide Charlie the Chimp and a host of other primates across the trees. They have to be careful though. A stick that’s too short or too long will cause the primates to fall.

Features include:

  • Improve your high score
  • Collect bananas
  • Purchase upgrades
  • Unlock new monkeys

Quality

On the main screen of the app, kids see a large number of buttons. On the top of the screen, they can purchase an ad-free version of the app, restore any IAPs, and view the leaderboard. On the bottom of the screen, they can access a tutorial, control the sound, and select a monkey. Somewhat ironically, the main monkey is named Charlie Chimp, but he has a tail. Don’t think kids will let that fact slip by! Tapping in the middle of the screen takes kids to the game. Playing the game is fairly simple and the tutorial does a good job of showing kids how it’s done.

Education

This app is not being rated for education.

Entertainment

To play the game, kids must grow the stick, and then use it to cross from tree to tree. If the stick is too long or too short, the monkey falls. Then the game ends. Kids will find that the game is fairly easy to learn how to play. However, getting the sticks the right length is a bit trickier. This happens particularly because the width of trees and length between them continually changes. Still, kids will enjoy trying to improve their high score.

Value

An in-app purchase allows kids to play without ads. However, the ads are not very prevalent. In general, the app offers a fun free game for kids. Just make sure purchases from the App Store is password protected.

Child Friendliness

Monkey Stick Crossing features a ton of unprotected in-app purchases. Kids can purchase a version of the app without ads. They can also purchase items to use in the game, such as additional watermelon slices and a chef’s hat. Ads appear at the bottom of the screen while kids play. They also occasionally appear as videos between rounds. However, they are not highly noticeable. An option to invite friends or share your high score via social media appears after each round.
