  • Participate in an interactive band
  • Learn about music, rhythms and notes
  • Build musical skill in a natural, sequential manner

Quality

Mussila is a very high quality app that offers a wealth of musical training to young children. Developers created an easy, intuitive interface that does not need any explanation at all. The musical examples used are varied in style and composition, and giving kids control over which characters play which instruments in the bands was a genius idea. Parents and music teachers will be thrilled with the quality and depth of the skills covered, and children will be engaged through many hours of productive play.

Education

Educators around the globe realize the strong connection between music and education. Learning musical concepts activates portions of the brain that are also responsible for many other important skills, including math understanding, reading comprehension, and more. Study after study has shown this connection and has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that kids who are exposed to music education also do better with many other types of learning tasks. Who wouldn’t want to give their children such an advantage?

Mussila plays like a game, but there is an incredible amount of learning going on. The app begins by having children listen to a musical selection and choose between two pictured instruments. Which one is playing behind the bushes? The app builds in complexity and skills demanded, passing through levels that have two instruments playing simultaneously and needing to be identified to levels presenting percussion notation and even actual snippets of melody notes that children must choose to show which notation represents the music they hear. The app quickly has them playing simple and familiar tunes on a virtual keyboard, and that skill plus the music reading skills will easily transfer to real-world music-making.

Entertainment

This app is quite entertaining. Each exercise is very short and crisp, so kids won’t have a chance to get bored. Successful completion of exercises leads to a selection of rewards, including playing with an interactive band and earning accessories for the characters’ outfits. Plus players will have the satisfaction of seeing their progress on the path to mastering the entire app.  There are 40 levels available, so that could take a bit!

Value

Mussila costs $4.99 on the App Store. This may seem a bit pricey at first, but when you consider that there are no in-app purchases and your child will gain skills that will enhance academic learning and lay a foundation for musical education, it seems like a very reasonable price.  It’s certainly an economical way to help your youngster gain beginning music skills and is well worth the investment.
