The musical examples used are varied in style and composition, and giving kids control over which characters play which instruments in the bands was a genius idea. Parents and music teachers will be thrilled with the quality and depth of the skills covered, and children will be engaged through many hours of productive play.

The app quickly has them playing simple and familiar tunes on a virtual keyboard, and that skill plus the music reading skills will easily transfer to real-world music-making.

This app is quite entertaining. Each exercise is very short and crisp, so kids won’t have a chance to get bored. Successful completion of exercises leads to a selection of rewards, including playing with an interactive band and earning accessories for the characters’ outfits. Plus players will have the satisfaction of seeing their progress on the path to mastering the entire app. There are 40 levels available, so that could take a bit!

Mussila costs $4.99 on the App Store.
