Toca Life: School App Review
It’s time to head to school with Toca Boca. However, this school is a lot different than the schools your children may be familiar with. In this school, they have free reign. They can walk from building to building, go out to recess whenever they want, and even start a food fight in the cafeteria. The latest app in the Toca Life series is truly the school of kids’ dreams.
- Interact with multiple characters
- Play in different settings
- Record audio and video of characters
- Make music and other sound effects
Developers have created a welcoming environment full of the Toca Boca characters kids love. The app contains a lot of fun music and sound effects, which parents can turn off in the settings section of their devices. That detail and other instructions parents might need are found in the protected parent area. From the instruments in the Youth Club to the warming trays in the cafeteria, kids will also find lots of fun details throughout the app.
Like the other apps in the Toca Life series, Toca School does not focus on specific skills as much as it focuses on child-directed play and storytelling. As kids interact with the characters in the app, they will naturally come up with their own storylines. The recording feature allows kids to narrate and play back the stories they create. Parents should take some time to watch those stories and talk with kids as they play with the app. Since kids have free reign, there are plenty of opportunities for parents to talk to kids about positive behaviors, such as cleaning up after you make a mess.
Kids love being in control and, in this app, there is plenty for them to control. In the main school building, kids can open their lockers, talk to the secretary, use the bathroom, play around in a chemistry lab, or even draw on the whiteboard. On the playground, they can shoot hoops, play a game of hopscotch, or run around with friends. There’s also a youth club with a ping pong table, pool table, complete rock band, and other fun elements, and a cafeteria full of food and drinks.
The app is priced the same as other Toca apps. Given the quality and amount of activities kids can enjoy, it is worth a download at that price.
This app is designed to give children free reign in a controlled community. All of the content is child-friendly, although some of it (ie; food fights) may not be parent approved. However, there is a more apps icon in the bottom right hand corner of the main screen and a protected parent area. The app also requests access to the microphone and photos so kids can record videos of their characters’ actions in the app.
