A Forest of Families is a hand-drawn storybook app that takes readers on a journey through a forest full of various animals and fun sounds for children to enjoy. This rhyming tale offers simple, hand-drawn illustrations that add a bit of character to this sweet app making it quite unique and beautiful.

Features include:

  • Rhyming story
  • Hand-drawn illustrations
  • Read to me/Read to myself options

The first thing you notice about this storybook app is the simple hand-drawn technique used for the illustrations throughout the story that adds a bit of character to the story. The developers have done a nice job creating a simple to use interface as readers only need to swipe through the pages as they read on their own or with the narrator. While the images add a nice touch to the story, the overall quality of the app could us a bit of polishing with re-positioning the text (currently the text overshadows some of the illustrations) and adding text highlighting to help a bit with the readability of the text.

It’s always nice to find a story book app that provides a bit of educational material for children to learn and A Forest of Families does just that. Not only will readers learn what kinds of animals live in the forest, but they also get to learn a few fun facts about the animals as well. For instance, the life cycle of a frog and the fact that a baby deer is called a fawn and the mother is called a doe are all facts that are included within the story. This is a great way for children to learn while they practice their reading skills.

The developers have included narration options within the app that allows early readers to practice their reading skills, however text-highlighting is not included. Adding this feature would allow early readers to follow along and learn new vocabulary words and strengthen their reading skills as they enjoy the story.

As mentioned before, this storybook app includes lots of great sound effects that accompany the story. Children are going to love reading and re-reading the story to see which animals live in the forest. In addition to the story, there is also a coloring activity that allows readers to draw and color their own pictures which is a fun added activity. Unfortunately there seems to be an issue saving and printing the pictures once they are drawn as it kicks the user out of the app when using those options.

Priced at just under three dollars this app is in line with most of the other storybook apps available. With the read to me and read to myself narration options, the educational story, and the additional coloring activity included this app is a good value overall.

Child Friendliness

The developers have done an excellent job making sure this app is easy to use for children as it includes narration options and simple swipe technology to move throughout the story. It also includes protected parent-only gateways that are great for younger users to ensure this app is completely safe to use for children of all ages.
