Quality
Read-Kids Learn to Read and Write in 20 Lessons is a very high quality app. It is well organized and intuitive to use, and is perfect for the target audience of preschool and young elementary children. The app will keep track of multiple users’ progress through the exercises, though it does not provide information about performance, just completion. The exercises are colorful and clearly voiced. There are options in the settings section to control the pacing of the voice as well as the pitch. One minor drawback is that each exercise changes color scheme for print and background, and some of the combinations are relatively low contrast, making viewing somewhat difficult, particularly for students who have minor visual impairment.
Education
This app is a great introduction to the world of reading for preschoolers and young elementary students. It begins with lessons about the most common phonemes (sounds) of English, and introduces only five at a time in each lesson. Students move from identifying the sound to applying it to read syllables and words. The app also introduces 100 common sight words. By the time a student completes all 100 lessons and the companion supplemental activities, he or she should be reading at approximately the second grade level.
The app also includes a multitude of supplemental activities (including comprehension and writing exercises) that really enhance the lessons. Each activity has a selection of levels that correspond to the lessons introducing sounds. All in all, this app is very well suited to helping young children learn to read.
There is an explanatory section available with each lesson and each supplemental exercise that parents can access for further information and suggestions. These are quite helpful, and parents should consider looking them over.
Entertainment
This app isn’t intended to be flashy, but the reinforcement sequences do seem a bit more drab than they need to be. After each exercise, a piece of candy or other decoration at the bottom of the page lights up and the narrator gives a positive message. It might help if students were allowed to collect points or other motivators that gave them access to brief interactive games such as memory or a balloon-popping game.
Value
This app costs just $4.99 in the App Store, so it’s a huge value. Very few apps in this price range are as comprehensive, cover as much ground, and have comparable play value. If you have a preschooler or a young school-aged child, I highly recommend that you take a close look.
